  From The Secretary

The year 2007-08 was stupendous for the club. The football season began with a bang by  winning the Federation Cup and qualifying for competing in AFC Cup matches. Great expectations and enthusiasm were generated amongst all club lovers. But the hope to win yet again Kolkata Premier Division League eluded us. In the most coveted I-League, which is the gold-edged tournament of the country, the performance of the club was simply pathetic and a determined struggle had to be waged under a new coach to evade shameful relegation from the First Division. Thankfully club could retain its position despite serious odds. A lot of hope blossomed during AFC cup matches particularly after historic victory against Al Weehdat of Jordan in their home ground - that was the first time any Indian team registered a victory against any club in the middle east.

But further progress stalled due to inter alia non-cooperative attitude pf AIFF in the name of unending camp for national team.

Enriched with the experiences of the dismal last year, all efforts have been made to form a formidable football team for 2008-09. Best possible players have been recruited, pre-season conditioning camp has been organized under a very professional Belgian Physio-Trainer. It is expected the players will do justice to their own goodwill and present all supporters and club lovers a series of joy of victories.

The fiercely fought election has brought back the old guards to manage the club which clearly underscored the trust and confidence of the members in the dedicated and selfless service rendered by the officials who relentlessly strive to push the club to move forward.

The club has acquired a property to provide comfortable accommodation to outstation players under one roof in a respectable locality in South Kolkata , a first time for any club in Kolkata. Work for the members' gallery is on. Efforts are being made to establish a Free Bed for ailing sportsperson in a leading hospital in Kolkata, which will be named after East Bengal Club.

Efforts to open an academy is in collaboration with suitable sponsors are on. This ambitious project needs investment of huge amounts. The academy aims at developing young players of high quality and also to offer them career opportunities for their future. Once established it will serve the young generation of the nation for ages to come. Any support, help and assistance from all members and supporters will be gratefully acknowledged in this web page.

This web page is being redesigned and new attractive features will be brought in including prize luring competition. I once again appeal to all concerned to subscribe to the website for commercial utilization.

Finally, I humbly request all members and supporters to encourage and greet the players and not to get provoked to shower abuses or hurl stones at them. We must remember football is a game and in every game win and loss are just two sides of the same coin. There is no escape from this hard and harsh reality !

Long live East Bengal Club!
