East Bengal started their I League campaign in style as they thrashed Chirag United SC by 3-1 margin in their opening match played today evening at Vidyasagar Krirangan, Barasat.
Surkumar Singh (10’), Yusif Yakubu (19’) and Sunil Chhetri (28’) scored for East Bengal while Sankar Oraon (79') reduced the margin for Chirag United SC.
The red & gold side looked a determined side with a four fold attack comprising of Renedy-Yakubu-Edmilson-Sunil raiding the Chirag United citadel right from the start.
The first goal came in the 10th minute as Surkumar ran down the right flank and took a power-packed right footer from the right edge of the penalty box which entered the net past goalkeeper Arindam Ghosh.
Lethal Ghanaian hitman Yusif Yakubu headed home the second goal nine minutes later off a Renedy Singh cross from the left wing.
In the 29th minute Edmilson’s lob from the centre circle was partly cleared with a weak header from Arnab Mondal and Sunil Chhetri latched on to the loose ball and made a clinical finish past an advancing Arindam Ghosh.
In the second half Chirag United tried to make a comeback with heavy underfoot conditions prevailing in the ground due to rain but East Bengal hold on to their citadel. However in the 79th minute Sankar Oraon reduced the margin for Chirag United with a brilliant power-packed left footer.
Sunil Chhetri of East Bengal was adjudged Man of the Match.
